Leo Chevalier was a trailblazer in Canadian fashion, known for challenging the conventions of Montreal’s garment industry and elevating Canadian design on the world stage. Beginning his career as a window dresser in Montreal, he quickly rose to prominence by presenting his first collection in 1963 and opening his own haute couture fashion house in 1967. Chevalier’s innovative vision and commitment to excellence earned him the distinction of being the first designer ever to receive the Order of Canada. He also made his mark beyond the runway, helping design Air Canada’s iconic 1972 in-flight uniforms.

Throughout his career, Leo Chevalier was recognized as one of only a handful of Canadian designers who helped put Canadian fashion on the map. In 1992, he was awarded the “Griffe D’or” Prix Hommage in recognition of his longevity and significant contributions to the Quebec and Canadian fashion industry.
